UK & Ireland Farm Safety Week

Written by Safe Ag Systems | Jul 14, 2025 12:15:00 PM

Safe Ag Systems is proud to participate in Farm Safety Week 2025. Running from the 21 - 25th July 2025, the Farm Safety Foundation (Yellow Wellies) initiative is now in its 13th year in the UK and Ireland.

This year’s theme from Yellow Wellies is “Unlucky for some?”. It reflects on the progress made over the past 13 years and highlights the challenges that still make farming a risky endeavour for some.

This week's goal is to challenge and change attitudes towards risks and safety. It particularly highlights the importance of wearing correct Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and exercising caution around agricultural vehicles and machinery.

“This year’s campaign offers an opportunity for a reset in the way we approach farm safety and risk-taking. Each of us can improve how we work on the farm but we also have a responsibility not to tolerate poor safety behaviours in others. It’s not somebody else’s job to drive this change in culture, and we can not rely on luck when going about our daily tasks – luck has a habit of running out!”Stephanie Berkeley, Farm Safety Foundation manager

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) helps reduce health and safety risks. It's used to support existing safety controls and as the last line of defence. It typically includes items like gloves, goggles, sunscreen, sunglasses, and long pants.

Workers must know how to use it correctly and when to apply it. Employers must provide appropriate PPE along with training and clear instructions on its use.

4 Steps to a Risk Management Process in Agriculture to keep S.A.F.E

The purpose of a risk management framework is to eliminate or reduce risk. The risk management process to achieve this is very simple – keep S.A.F.E.

S = see it. Identify the hazards and things that could hurt someone.

A = assess it. Think about what harm could come from the hazard, and how serious it might be.

F = fix it. Put ‘risk controls’ in place to eliminate or reduce the risk.

= evaluate it. Did the risk controls work as you thought? This gives you a chance to tweak things to improve farm safety. Keep tweaking until you’re happy you’ve got things as good as possible.

Buckle Up for Safety

It might seem like common sense - when you get into a vehicle, you put your seat belt on. There are enough risks in daily farm life, so why are we ready to roll the dice over something so simple?

On a daily basis you’re operating a number of farm vehicles - utes, tractors, side-by-sides and trucks. You’re most likely getting in and out, numerous times a day, as you move across the farm. Have you ever thought about the potential consequences of not wearing a seat belt?
